Cancellation of IFTR 2020

Please note this article was published on 1 April 2020, the date of 10 April above indicates how long this article will remain as the headline article on the news feed.

Dear Members of IFTR,

In view of the escalating pandemic, health concerns, national lockdowns and global restrictions on travel, we deeply regret that IFTR will not be able to host the Galway conference scheduled to take place in July 2020.

Because agreements to host an IFTR conference are negotiated years in advance, the cancellation of the 2020 conference involves our Executive Committee reaching out to all up-and-coming hosts – including Galway – to determine and confirm a post-2020 schedule.

Our intention is to issue a full statement to you all by Friday 10th April. By then, we hope to be in position to offer clarity regarding the immediate cancellation scenario (including specifics for bursary awardees and our essay prize winners) and future conference arrangements.

On behalf of the Executive Committee, I close this interim statement by asking two things of our membership. Firstly, I invite you to join the Executive Committee in thanking the Galway team for all their efforts to date – their unstinting dedication to working towards an event overtaken by unforeseen, unprecedented circumstances. And secondly, as the ground has shifted dramatically since we last posted a conference statement on 17th March, I kindly ask for your patience and understanding as the Executive Committee continues working towards the full statement of future intent to be issued shortly.

Stay safe. Stay well.

With the very best of wishes,

Elaine Aston

President of IFTR
