Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Performance Creation
Concordia University’s Department of Theatre in the Faculty of Fine Arts invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Performance Creation at the intersection of scholarship and practice for August 1, 2017.

Taking advantage of our place within the rich fabric of a research university and our long history as one of the premiere sites in Canada for the study and creation of the arts and arts-based scholarship, the Faculty of Fine Arts is currently engaged in a transformative moment in which pedagogical, conceptual, theoretical, and material practices find resonance with a significant diversity of approaches. In our university community, we value equally those practices that embrace aesthetic activism, live performance, historical scholarship, technical experimentation, skills-based production, community fieldwork, as well as traditional and digital fabrication.
As part of its 2015 Academic Appraisal, the Department of Theatre has adopted a mission of “breaking down walls.” The first step taken in advancing that mission was the merger and redesign of three older programs into a new BFA Specialization in Performance Creation that supports emerging artists who seek multidisciplinary knowledge, training, and expertise. Moving forward, it is the intention of the department to reach out to other entities in the Faculty of Fine Arts and to the larger university to emphasize collaboration with practitioners from other fields, disciplines, and sectors. This value is to be the focus of all new hires for the foreseeable future, including this one.
The successful candidate will be an artist-researcher with demonstrated expertise in one or more areas of dramaturgy, text-based performance creation, community-engaged arts, or directing. S/he will also have experience in teaching histories and theories of theatre and performance. Preference will be given to applicants who embrace transdisciplinary and non-traditional approaches to theatre practice, such as devised, immersive or site-specific performance and multi-disciplinary collaboration. The ability to teach in studio, seminar, and lecture settings at both undergraduate and graduate levels is essential. We seek candidates who will complement and diversify the department’s cultural, methodological and theoretical strengths. The ideal candidate will be dynamic, ready to collaborate with colleagues across the Faculty and engage in contributing to our public performance offerings.
The successful candidate will be expected to establish and conduct a program of creative scholarly activity and academic research/publication. S/he will teach courses primarily at the undergraduate level and will participate in the development of graduate studies in the Performing Arts, as well as potentially undertake research supervision at the graduate level in the Individualized Program and the Humanities Doctorate at Concordia. Responsibilities will also include program stewardship as well as active involvement in committee and administrative work at the department and Faculty level. Prior activities demonstrating leadership, service, and commitment to diversity inside or outside academic institutions is strongly sought after.
Applicants should have a completed terminal degree (PhD or MFA) in a field or discipline of demonstrated relevance, post-secondary teaching experience, and a proven record of administrative and committee service. Although classes are taught in English, fluency in French and knowledge of the Québec cultural context are considered assets.

Subject to budgetary approval, we anticipate filling this position, normally at the rank of Assistant Professor, for August 1, 2017. Appointments at a more senior level may also be considered. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
