Brooklyn College’s MA Theater History & Criticism program encourages a comprehensive understanding of the theater as a lively cultural, sociological phenomenon in continual transformation, and characterized by a diversity of form and content.

The program offers a multi-faceted approach to academic training that allows students to integrate their scholarly and artistic interests in pursuit of their individual goals. We offer a variety of courses and seminars in the history of world theatre, theories of the theater, and applied criticism. Our students have unique opportunities to collaborate with the many creative voices that make up Brooklyn College’s esteemed Theater Department. Working with MFA directors, actors, and playwrights, our MA candidates are active participants in a dynamic discourse on the art of theatre.

Our faculty is deeply committed to nurturing students' individual paths. This commitment is evidenced in the many successes of our alumni. Several have gone on to prestigious Ph.D. programs at leading universities, including Northwestern; The Graduate Center, CUNY; and Cornell University. Others have pursued notable careers as literary managers, dramaturges, and theater educators both in the United States and internationally.
