Online petition for the preservation of the Institute for Theatre Studies at Leipzig University
04 February, 2014
As some of you might already have heard: the Institute for Theatre Studies at Leipzig University is threatened by closure. See below for more info and please consider signing the online petition for the preservation of the Institute for Theatre Studies at Leipzig University!
On January 21, 2014, the president’s office of Leipzig University all of a sudden picked out five positions at the Institute to be cancelled until the year 2020. Thereby, the termination of the courses and programs in Theatre Studies (BA, MA and PhD level) would be inevitable.
The Leipzig Institute for Theatre Studies is the only one within East Germany. It maintains numerous contacts and partnerships on international level as well as with theatres, cultural institutions and artists of the city. It is an engine for the theatre and cultural scene of the whole region. Therefore, its survival is an essential condition for the cultural environment in Leipzig and Eastern Germany.A unique feature of the Leipzig institute within German Theatre and Performance Studies is the extensive combination of contemporary theatre and art forms with the cultural history of theatre, within research, teaching and practice. This integrative approach also characterizes the development of methods and theory at the institute, allowing all kinds of theatre to be reflected as cultural practice within the academic context.
Best wishes, Peter Eversmann
